Once an initial concept is worked out with the client, some sketches are created. A clay scale model is created where the design is refined and any final changes can be incorporated. The clay model gets a silicone mold and a hard plaster model is cast. This model is used for scale measurements during the stone carving .
This was a project carved while at Oberg Studio. Starting with a 5 ton block, a 4 foot stripped bass is layed out using plaster model (pictured top left) made by sculptor Jay Bothwell. Stone is roughed into general shape, then surface details and polishing.
